The Life Of Jackie Robinson: An All-Star Legend
Jackie Robinson is remembered as a pioneer for helping integrate Major League Baseball, but he accomplished so much beyond the field of baseball throughout his lifetime. Let’s take a look at his remarkable story.
Childhood and Military Service
John “Jackie” Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia to Mallie and Jerry Robinson on January 31, 1919. Despite being born into poverty, the Robinson family was highly ambitious; Mallie and Jerry made sure to proclaim the importance of education in the household and all five of the Robinson children were able to attend college.
By the time Jackie was 10, he was living with his mother and siblings in Pasadena, California. Not only did Jackie excel academically, but he also was a star athlete in football, basketball and track and field. He even earned an athletic scholarship to UCLA and become the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports.
Life in the Major Leagues
Following his time at UCLA, Jackie joined the United States Army during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 and soon asked to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers by team owner Branch Rickey. Jackie became the first African American baseball player to be signed in the MLB in 1947.
Despite being teased and heckled by crowds, Jackie Robinson didn’t let racism dictate his success- instead he became an MVP in 1949, retired in in 1957 following a trade to the Giants, and was named the Louisville Slugger Man of the Year in 1958.
Legacy of a Pioneer
Jackie Robinson would’ve gone down in history as an all-star even if he had only been an athlete- but he went beyond being a star athlete. He was actively involved in the civil rights movement, speaking alongside Malcolm X and other active voices of the time. He became the first black television analyst for ABC in 1965, and despite his deteriorating health, he participated in demonstrations with the NAACP against the Vietnam War.
On October 24, 1972, Jackie passed away from a heart attack in his California home. However, his legacy lives on. In 1997, Major League Baseball retired Robinson’s Jersey number “42”, and in 2004 he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. His life serves as a reminder that hard work, dedication and perseverance can help break barriers and legends can be made.
